The quake hit at 3:00 a.m. local time, with its epicentre 26 km northwest of Suez and about 120 km south-southeast of Port Said, according to preliminary data cited by Russia's al-Youm.
Journalists in Egypt and Gaza reported the earthquake lasted several minutes and was clearly felt by residents.
Tremors were also detected in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus and the occupied territories.
No immediate reports of damage or casualties were available.
