Since February 28, 2026, the US and Israeli strikes on Iran have made one thing unmistakably clear: in wars launched by aggressive powers, it is often their allies who end up carrying the heaviest burden.
In the Middle East, the sharpest shocks from America’s wars have repeatedly been absorbed by the [Persian] Gulf states. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and the current war has brought traffic along this route to the brink of paralysis — a disruption the International Energy Agency has described as “the biggest supply disruption yet.”
In these circumstances, the real question is not how far Trump is willing to go against Iran. The real question is whether, in pursuit of his larger political and strategic ambitions, he is prepared to sacrifice the [Persian] Gulf states themselves.
