US, UK attack on Yemen will exacerbate regional tensions

TEHRAN, Jan. 13 (MNA) – China's envoy to the United Nations warns about the pending regional consequences of the United States and Britain's recent military attack against Yemen.

Zhang Jun made the remarks at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, a day after the Western allies attacked the Arab Peninsula nation with warplanes and Tomahawk missiles.

The attack came in response to Yemen's strikes in support of the Gaza Strip which has come under a genocidal and Washington-backed Israeli war.

"The military action launched by the US and the UK against Yemen will undoubtedly exacerbate regional tensions," Zhang said.

"We call on all parties to effectively abide by the UN Charter and international law. And to make joint efforts to maintain peace and security in the Red Sea and the Middle East," he added.

The Chinese official also took aim at the Israeli regime's hypocritical accusations against the UN of not being able to provide humanitarian assistance for Gaza amid the incessant Israeli war.

"It is Israel that has continued its indiscriminate bombardment against Gaza, and has placed numerous obstacles blocking access to humanitarian supplies. But it is also Israel that has accused the United Nations of not having the ability to provide humanitarian assistance. This is totally unacceptable," Zhang pointed out.

Israel waged the war on the strip on October 7 after the Gaza-based Palestinian Resistance groups of Hamas and Islamic Jihad carried out the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm into the occupied territories in response to the occupying regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

At least 23,700 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in the war, and more than 60,000 individuals have been injured.

Tel Aviv has also imposed a “complete siege” on Gaza, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.
