UN special envoy tries to resume Yemeni peace talks in Oman

MUSCAT, Jul. 16 (MNA) – The UN special envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, and the Omani government have joined forces to re-launch the peace negotiations between Yemen's fighting factions.

Cheikh Ahmed arrived in Salalah along with delegates from the rebel movement Ansar Allah and the General People's Congress (GPC) of the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The representatives of the armed opposition to the government of President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi held meetings with several authorities of the Sultanate, including the Foreign Minister Yousef bin Alawi bin Abdullah.

According to unofficial and diplomatic sources, the meeting between UN special envoy, Bin Abdullah, the Houthis delegates and the GPC focused on opening channels of understanding to avoid the collapse of negotiations which started on April 21st in Kuwait City.

Peace talks should begin this Friday, after two months of suspension to facilitate consultations, and the holy month of Ramadan.
