'EU should compensate for lost opportunities in Iran'

TEHRAN, Jan. 23 (MNA) – Greek president, while receiving the credentials of Iran's new envoy to Athens, stressed the need to boost ties of Iran and EU.

Prokopios Pavlopoulos and Majid Talabi Shabestari discussed expansion of bilateral relations in economic and political arenas.

Pointing to outstanding historical background of Iran and Greece, as well as Tehran-Athens cultural and civilizational ties, Greek president emphasized furthering of relations in all aspects, saying he hopes to visit Iran and meet his Iranian counterpart as soon as possible; as he is personally eager to visit a historical country like Iran."

Given Iran’s prominent role in the region, Pavlopoulos said "I believe no major regional issue would come to an end without Iran," expressing pleasure that his European partners have noticed the fact.

“Any kind of provocative relations is harmful not only for the region, but also for the Europe and the world,” the president reiterated.

Iran’s newly-appointed ambassador, for his turn, urged the expansion of economic ties with Greece noting the great capacities of the two countries.
