New studies determine Fourth Salt Man died young

TEHRAN, May 2 (MNA) -- The most recent studies on the Fourth Salt Man have determined that he died young, the director of the Chehrabad Studies Center said on Monday.

“No hair had grown on the face of the man, who is about 170 centimeters tall,” Abolfazl Ali added.

Discovered in Hamzehlu Salt Mine in early March 2005, the Fourth Salt Man is the most intact of the “salt men” discovered in the mine, which is located near Chehrabad village about 75 kilometers from the northwestern provincial capital city of Zanjan.

The studies carried out by Oxford University have indicated that the previously discovered salt men lived 1700 years ago.

“The upper part of the outer covering of the Fourth Salt Man stretched to his knees and his pants are short and did not completely cover his legs. In his belt, the salt man also had a sheathed dagger, probably made of iron,” Ali said.

In addition, the salt man wore two earrings, which experts are studying to determine their quality, he noted.

Two jugs were discovered near the salt man, which experts surmise were used as containers for oil that was burned to illuminate the mine, he added.

The second and third salt men were discovered in the Hamzehlu Salt Mine last November and January.
