TEHRAN, Dec. 08 (MNA) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, stressing that there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan, said "Afghanistan's issue can only be settled politically."

Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, Speaker of House of the People (Wolesi Jirga) of Afghanistan, on the sidelines of the '2nd Speakers' Conference, The Challenges of Terrorism and Inter-Regional Connectivity'.

"The US military troops are tired of being present in Afghanistan," Larijani said, adding "terrorism and drugs are two blades of a scissors and we hope this issue would be resolved in Afghanistan as soon as possible through political means."

Larijani further noted the importance of enhancing cooperation in various fields, adding "economic cooperation between the two countries is tied together."

Stressing the importance of cooperation in combating smuggling, Larijani said that many countries are buckled under the pressure of water crisis which can be the source of disagreement or development. Therefore, bilateral resources can be used to solve the issue in order to develop relations between the two countries.

Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, for his part, pointed to the presence of ISIL terrorists in Afghanistan, saying "maintaining peace and security in the country is highly regarded since the terrorists put our neighboring countries into trouble, as well."

"The terrorists are equipped with advanced weapons and intend to cross the borders to other countries, so cooperation of all countries is crucial for peace in Afghanistan," he added.

Tehran hosts the second inter-parliamentary conference on terrorism in which top parliamentarians from the country, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, Russia, and China participate.

The conference is aimed at weighing plans to combat terrorism, share the experiences of participants, adopt new and effective regional approaches, promote regional cooperation, and push for the establishment of broad-based and sustainable peace and development.

The previous meeting was held in Pakistan’s Islamabad in December 2017.
