Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi made the comment in response to remarks made by US Secretary of Defense James Mattis who accused Iran during his visit to London on Friday of being an “exporter of terrorism” and “sponsor [of] militant activity”.
“Iran believes that one of the main causes of the inefficiency of international measures in fighting terrorism is misleading the public opinion on the actual roots and financial and ideological sources of terrorism,” Ghasemi said.
“As long as certain countries led by the US are steadfastly ignoring the actual origin of Takfiri-Wahhabi terrorism and extremism, one cannot and must not expect that this growing infectious wound will be ever controlled and terminated,” he added.
Ghasemi went on to add, “we would like to remind this American official that if the US is really serious about combating terrorism, they need to stop leveling baseless, spiteful accusations against Iran and instead oblige their allied states in the region to cease their expansive funding of terrorist groups.”
