Mr. Zarif met with Mr. Guterres, the new UN Secretary-General on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference on Saturday where the former said Rohingya Muslims of Burma had been suffering torture and prosecution in the hands of the majority Buddhist population; in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, the scale of suffering, mainly by civilians, escape words, while the UN had largely been an onlooker, failing to effectively address all these disastrous situations to rectify the vices happening in these countries.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes helping the UN Secretary-General in initiatives to address global crises,” Zarif added.
Mr. Guterres for his part said the UN would continue support for JCPOA signed between Iran and world six powers and “deems the deal as a bolstering global peace and security.”
Guterres welcomed a visit to Tehran in the first opportunity possible by an official invitation made by Zarif.
