Mehrdad Rayani Makhsous, Director of the International Section of the 35th Fajr International Theater Festival, said this year’s event will host at the competition section 10 Iranian plays and 20 foreign ones from 12 countries including Spain, France, Iraq, Turkey, Georgia, Poland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Japan and joint production of Iran and Netherlands.
He added that over 250 applications had been submitted to the secretariat of the festival.
Rayani also deemed this year’s number of foreign participation at the festival ‘unprecedented’.
Some of these plays include “One” by Judith de Joode from Netherlands, “Choir of the Orphans” by Jerzy Zon from Poland, “I, Sisyphus” by Veselka Kuncheva from Bulgaria, “The Lower Depths” by Davit Duishvili and “Psychosis” by Maka Natsvlishvili, both from Georgia, “You’re Not a Fish After All” by Mihran Tomasyan from Turkey, and “Loan” by Amer Abolheil from Iraq.
“Most of the foreign plays are dumbshows that use no speech for putting the meaning across,” he said. “Instead, the focus is on visual elements and the use of technology and modern methods in theater.”
The 35th Fajr International Theater Festival will be held in Tehran and a number of other provinces across the country on 20-31 January, 2017.
