Former Iranian Vice President and former presidential candidate Mohammad Reza Aref, who is leading the Reformist candidates list for Tehran in the 10th Parliamentary elections, told reporters at the Hosseinieh Ershad that today’s elections will be a follow-up on the 2013 presidential election in which moderate Hassan Rouhani took office, saying “I believe over 70 percent of people will participate in the elections today.”
“The nation fully understands Iran’s domestic, regional and international situation and will take part in the elections with utmost enthusiasm,” he said.
He went on to add that, “of course there are a number of on-going conflicts in certain regional countries, and for this very reason, circumstances demand that the Islamic Republic as the most stable country in the region have a more active role in regional affairs.”
30 Reformists in Tehran are vying for seats under the leadership of Mohammed Reza Aref, while the main Principlist faction in the elections is headed by Gholamali Hadad Adel, a former parliament speaker.
