TEHRAN, May 17 (MNA) –- The Arab language daily Al-Hayat in an article in its Sunday issue praised prominent Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami.

Pointing to two new films by Kiarostami participating in the non-competition section of the 57th Cannes Film Festival, it added, “Kiarostami is among the few top celebrated directors producing valuable artwork via his knowledge of art and cinema, and his deep look at man.”

“His two new films “Five,” and “Ten on Ten,” reveal the fact that the Iranian director has long tried to initiate new concepts in his work, trying hard to represent new ideas for cinema enthusiasts and critics,” the daily wrote.

The articles continued, “He is not like other directors, drowning in their own monotonous issues so that they can preserve their name and status. Kiarostami has sought new horizons in his work.”

The Lebanese daily further compared Kiarostami’s “Ten on Ten” with his “Taste of Cherry,” winner of the Palm d’or in 1997 at the Cannes Film Festival. Noting, “Kiarostami once again has depicted the sensitive spirit of women and the social issues they face in their every day life in his new film “Ten on Ten.”

“Kiarostami appeared on the scene in 1970 with the short film ‘Bread and Street,’ gradually succeeding with his work to initiate new ideas achieving fame among world directors.”

The daily added that a ceremony paying tribute to Kiarostami’s work, with a series of his works be screened, will be held May 26 at Cannes.

The 57th Cannes Film Festival is currently underway and will continue until May 23.
