‘Iran is upholder of peace, brotherhood in Persian Gulf’

BANDAR ABBAS, Nov. 22 (MNA) – The 20th international conference on the Persian Gulf entitled “Comprehensive Cooperation in the Persian Gulf: Mechanisms for Development and Regional Stability” opened on Monday in the port city of Bandar Abbas on the shores of the Persian Gulf.

Opening the conference, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran has been the flag bearer of peace and friendship in the Persian Gulf.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been the upholder of peace, brotherhood, and regional cooperation, and has conveyed the message of friendship to our Muslim Arab bothers through various means,” Mottaki told the conference.

The minister added Iran has always “stretched out its hand” for friendship in the region.

Mottaki went on to say that Iran organizes conferences with the aim of finding solutions to regional issues and removing obstacles in the way of establishing a lasting peace and sustainable development in the region.

He also called on the experts attending the conference to thoroughly discuss the security, economic, and environmental issues facing the region and help the decision-makers adopt proper policies.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mottaki said as far as there is oil and gas reserves in the Persian Gulf region, the outside powers will keep sowing the seeds of discord between regional nations and destabilizing the region to justify their “illegitimate presence”.

The conference on the Persian Gulf will close on Tuesday.

Iranian, Italian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian, Pakistani, Polish, Turkish, Romanian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese, French, Indonesian, and Greek researchers delivered speeches at the conference and discussed the issues related to the Persian Gulf region on expert panels.

The experts participating in the conference discuss subjects such as the impacts of the world financial crisis on the Persian Gulf region, clean energies’ role in creating a sound and safe environment in the Persian Gulf, environmental issues facing the Persian gulf, mechanisms for cooperative protection of the region’s environment, regional integration mechanisms, stabilizing factors in the Persian Gulf, obstacles in the way of regional convergence and solutions for removal of these obstacles, proposals for expansion of regional ties, the role of tourism in creating lasting peace and security in the region, proposals for establishment and restructuring of the regional economic and commercial cooperation organizations, the role of the Persian Gulf’s oil and gas reserves in minimizing the effects of the international economic crisis, effects of the sanctions imposed on Iran on the economy of the region, factors contributing to the destabilization of the region like presence of extra-regional troops in the region and large purchases of arms by the regional states, and the relationship between the international security and stability of the Persian Gulf region.
