Iran FM felicitates South Africa on national day

TEHRAN, Apr. 28 (MNA) – In a post on his X account on Saturday, Hossein Amir-abdollahian congratulated the South African government and nation on the country’s Freedom Day.

South Africans celebrate their Freedom Day every April 27 to remember their country's pivotal first democratic election in 1994 that announced the official end of the racial segregation and oppression of apartheid.

Amir-abdollahian said the Iranian administration’s policy of focusing on multilateralism has promoted cooperation between Iran and South Africa within the framework of BRICS.

He further lauded South Africa’s lawsuit against the Israeli regime’s genocidal crimes and its explicit stances in support of Palestine, saying it proved that the aspirations of Mandela in the fight against cruelty and prejudice continue to exist.

In January, the ICJ, also known as the World Court, ordered Israel to refrain from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to ensure its troops committed no genocidal acts against Palestinians after South Africa accused Israel of state-led genocide in Gaza.

But Israel’s bombardment and blockade have continued.

Israel has been criticized for targeting civilians, with more than 80 percent of those killed being women and children.

At least 34,388 Palestinians have been killed and 77,437 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
