No alternative mechanism to JCPOA

TEHRAN, Jul. 11 (MNA) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister says all sides to Iran’s nuclear deal have been making efforts to convince the US government that there is no alternative mechanism to the JCPOA.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday on the sidelines of his meeting with Iranian counterparts Abbas Araghchi and Takht-Ravanchi in Tehran, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stressed that Iran’s nuclear deal dubbed JCPOA is a beneficial agreement for Iran, as well as the security and stability of the region and the world.

“My assumption is that Trump’s administration is still considering its policies toward Iran in regard to the nuclear deal’s capacities and its appropriateness,” he added.

Ryabkov voiced concern over the potential violation of the JCPOA by the American side.

“We denounce any attempt at rewriting or re-interpreting the nuclear deal and believe that the agreement is balanced and positive,” he said.

He went on to voice full confidence that Iran and other countries who believe in the benefits of the nuclear deal will manage this critical period in a way that the US will stay committed to the agreement and will not deviate from its obligations.

When asked about the G20 summit and whether JCPOA was a topic of discussion, Ryabkov said “I am not fully informed of this, but I think issues on regional security and developments, particularly the Syrian crisis and what we believe to be Iran’s positive role, were discussed in the summit.”

According to him, other topics discussed were Ukraine situation, US-Russia’s bilateral relations, and the allegations of the American side about Russian involvement in the US election, which “are completely baseless.”

Ryabkov also voiced great disappointment over the three rounds of additional sanctions that were imposed against Iran since Donald Trump took office, adding “these sanctions are contradictory to the spirit of the JCPOA, if not the deal itself.”

“Such measures are an unacceptable attempt to test the good will of the Iranian side which is fully committed to the nuclear deal,” he stressed.
