EP chief arrives in Tehran to promote ties

TEHRAN, Nov. 07 (MNA) – President of the EU Parliament Martin Schulz has arrived in Tehran on Sat. for a one-day visit to promote talks between Iran and the European Union.

The visit of President of the European Union Parliament Martin Schulz and his accompanying delegation comes four months after the historic deal on Iran’s nuclear program.

The visit which marks Schulz’s first visit to Iran as the head of a European Union organization is said to be in line with improving relations between the European Union and the Islamic Republic.

Schulz is slated to hold talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and a number of other senior officials of the Islamic Republic.

EU legislators have given a broad welcome to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that was agreed upon between Iran and the 5+1 group of countries back in July. According to reports, during a debate in the European Parliament in September, the legislators were informed that the European Union intends to set up a diplomatic office in Tehran if the nuclear conclusion is fully implemented.

On the sidelines of the 70th annual session of the UN General Assembly on 17 Sep., President Hassan Rouhani also maintained that Iran and the EU should draw plans for considerable development of mutual relations based on common interests, following the success of the nuclear negotiations that concluded under the term of the JCPOA.

The JCPOA will put limits on Tehran's nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic, which will lead to further improvement of ties between Iran and western countries.
