Bahrain claims ‘baseless’: Afkham

TEHRAN, Jul. 27 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Sun. that Bahrain is repeating ‘baseless accusations’ against Iran to upset regional atmosphere.

Afkham’s remarks came in reaction to Bahrain’s allegation that Iran is meddling in its internal affairs, while the Islamic Republic has strongly denied any manner of interference stating that it only supports attempts to address human rights violations in Bahrain.

“Such unconstructive methods will not undermine Iran’s serious will and determination for its continuous pursuit of responsible and trust-building regional policy especially against threats of extremism and terrorism,” Afkham said.

The Iranian official further reaffirmed that leveling allegations against Iran has lost its effectiveness, advising the Bahraini officials to reconsider their approach to foreign policy.

Recently, Tehran and Manama relations have witnessed some tension as the tiny Arab state recalled its ambassador to Iran and also summoned Iran’s ambassador to Bahrain over claims that the Islamic Republic is meddling in its internal affairs.

Iran has repeatedly denied such allegations, while emphasizing that it would always support the oppressed people in the region.

Bahrain is a Persian Gulf state with a Shia majority population ruled by Al Khalifa Sunni royal family who came to power by the UK in 1971 after becoming independent from the Britain. The kingdom has for decades deprived Shia poppulation of some rigths and high-ranking positions.
