On Friday, the Iranian squad defeated the 2012 London Olympics champion Russia in three straight sets with the same fixture of 25-21, to register its six win in pool B table, enchanting some 12,000 enthusiastic fans in Tehran’s Azadi stadium.
Replacing injured Mikhaylov, Dmitriy Muserskiy was Zenit Kazan’s last resort who could not help versus Iranians’ power.
Shahram Mahmoudi led Slobodan Kovač’s boys with 16 points ahead of Milad Abbasspour who scored 10 points for Iran, while the Russia’s Sergey Savin and Dmitriy Muserskiy gained 13 and 10 points respectively.
Iran won the battle of the blocks four to two while out of Iran’s 75 points 42 were spikes in contrast with Russia’s 37 spikes out of their 63 total.
So far, the US is on top of the Pool B table with 23 points, with Poland trailing close behind at 20 and Iran in third place with 18, while Russia is rooted to the bottom with only 2 points. Poland and the United States are competing in Poland's Krakow.
The two teams will fight their second battle in Azadi Sport complex on Saturday at 9 pm local time.
