"Two people, a man, and a woman, unfortunately, lost their lives as a result of the explosion," it said in a statement on Sunday, Xinhua reported.
The blast occurred Saturday night at a church in the town of San Bartolome Tenango, where residents were celebrating a religious holiday, according to local media.
Authorities are investigating the incident, the statement said.
