TEHRAN, Aug. 02 (MNA) – The ambassador of the United States to Iraq announced Monday that the US Consulate in Basra, in the south of the country, has been closed due to security issues.

"We closed the US consulate in Basra due to some cost and security issues", Matthew Toller said.

"And we may have a different approach on resuming it," he added.

Toller also said Washington and Baghdad have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties.

According to him, Iraq is a country with strong sovereignty not only for its citizens but for the whole region.
