TEHRAN, Nov. 11 (MNA) – Collecting five gold medals, Iranian team of students claimed the first place at 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, held in China.

Nine Iranian students, Hoda Pourgholami, Amirali Ekhteraei, Amirpouya Moeini, Navid Akbari, Alireza Mohammadian, Ali Younesi, Kian Bakhtari, Mohammad Sadra Heidari, and Mohammad Shojaeian had been sent to the event, divided into two teams.

The first team collected five gold medals and took home the title while the second team pocketed one gold and three silvers.

Iranian students had finished third in the 2017 edition of IOAA in Thailand.

The 2018 edition of IOAA was held in China’s Beijing from November 3 to 11.

International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is an annual event for highly performed high school students from all around the world. Established in Thailand 2006, it was initiated by five countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, China and Poland with the aim to proliferate Astronomy among high school students, to foster friendship among young astronomers at international level so as to build cooperation in the field of Astronomy in the future among the young scholars.
