TEHRAN, May 03 (MNA) – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned Donald Trump on Thursday not to walk away from an internationally-brokered nuclear deal with Iran.

“If one day there is a better agreement to replace it, it’s fine, but we should not scrap it unless we have a good alternative,” Guterres said in an interview with BBC Radio 4.

“I believe the JCPOA was an important diplomatic victory and I think it will be important to preserve it, but I also believe there are areas in which it will be very important to have a meaningful dialogue because I see the region in a very dangerous position,” he said.

He further stressed that issues related to Iran’s regional influence should be separated from the country’s nuclear program.

Trump will decide on May 12 to whether continue wavering economic sanctions against Iran that had been lifted under the nuclear agreement. His decision to pull away from the deal is likely to result in re-imposing sanctions targeting Iran’s oil sector, banking, auto or shipping sector.

Meanwhile, Iran has said that without US commitment there will be no deal.
