TEHRAN, Dec. 23 (MNA) – Twenty six Iranian inmates have been extradited from the Republic of Azerbaijan to Iran's judiciary officials, through the border city of Astara on Friday.

Extradition of Iranian convicts was achieved as the result of efforts by Iranian Embassy in Baku, as well as the Ministry of Justice of Iran, based on a bilateral agreement on transferring convicted people in 1999.

The detainees, most of which have been sentenced for drug-related crimes and smuggling, will spend the rest of their period in Iranian prisons.

The extradition of the inmates was mulled at a meeting of the Iran’s Ambassador to Baku Mohsen Pak Ayeen and Azerbaijani Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov in Baku on March 1, 2017.
