Speaking at the opening ceremony of World Space Week, ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said depending on the needs of countries, a satellite is placed in these slots, stressing that those locations can be reserved for two years.
He went on to say in the previous administration, Iran didn’t manage to place a satellite in the registered slots dues to sanctions. But not all the problems are solved and they are making the necessary arrangements to place satellite in the new orbital locations. “In the meantime, we intend to rent these orbital slots to international carries in order to place satellites there” he added.
When asked about satellite activities for telecommunication in mountainous regions he replied “so far we have received no report of telecommunication through satellite in mountainous regions.”
He also mentioned a strategic plan for space services which will be devised within the next three months.
Toward the end of his speech, Jahromi criticized the fact that space science plays no role in the everyday life of people in Iran, and added that the country’s application of space technologies is not on par with world standards.
