Competitions for the first five categories in Greco-Roman division of 2017 World Cadet Championships were held in Ano Liosia Olympic Hall of Athens where three Iranian representatives succeeded in winning gold, silver and bronze medals.
Mohsen Madhani, in 58-kilogram category, overcame Vit Lebl of Czech Republic 9-0 in the qualification round and later had to thrash Bulgaria’s Ivo Krasimirov Iliev LIEV 10-0 in order to reach quarterfinals. In the run to the final round, the Iranian wrestler downed Maxim Canter from Moldova 8-0 as well as Japan’s Kosei Takeshita 11-2. He later pulled out a 14-3 victory over India’s Sonu Sonu to stand on top of the podium.
Silver medal of 63kg weight group went to Mostafa Kayedkhordeh of Iran who suffered a 1-3 loss against Ukraine’s Dmytro Miroshnyk in the final showdown. The Persian athlete had reached the last stage by routing Ruslan Hadisov from Azerbaijan (6-1), Kazakhstan’s Rakhat Sagymbay (8-0) as well as Georgia’s Otar Abuladze (4-2).
One more trophy, of bronze type though, was collected by Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini who quelled the Japanese contestant Yuri Nakazato 3-2 in the first round and later won over Bulgaria’s Ignat Sevinov Milenov 2-1. Although he breezed past Turkey’s Mehmet Atci in the quarterfinals, Hosseini suffered a 1-0 loss in the face of his American opponent Cohlton Michael Schultz. He occupied the third place after trouncing Kantemir Shibzukhov, a Russian rival, in the bronze-medal match.
Two other Greco-Roman wrestlers of Iran, Milad Rezanejad (50kg) and Mohammad Hosseinvand (54kg) failed to snatch medals.
Competitions kicked off on September 04 on three United World Wrestling (UWW) homologated mats and will wrap up on September 10.
