The sportive event ran from April 27 to 30 at the Ano Liosia Olympic Indoor Hall in the Greek capital and had attracted 2163 taekwondo practitioners form 53 world countries. The Iranian squad eventually stood on top of the podium after collecting one bronze and four gold trophies.
Iran had deployed 18 taekwondo fighters to Greece of whom Mohammad Kazemi, Mirhashem Hosseini, Armin Hadipour and Abolfazl Yaghubi succeeded in clinching gold medals and Sajjad Mardani landed third. Other members of the Iranian team failed to garner medals dropping out of the tournament.
Action in Athens featured both kuorugi and poomsae competitions. Athletes competed in 28 weight categories across three age divisions, senior, junior and cadet.
The tournament operated a single elimination system according to World Taekwondo Federation rules, with individual matches consisting of three two minute rounds with a one minute break between each.
