TEHRAN, Feb. 13 (MNA) – Head of Supreme National Security Council called on European Union to play a more effective role in settling Yemen crisis and preventing the cruel slaughter of Yemeni people by Saudi Arabia.

Ali Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn on Monday in Tehran, adding “silence in the face of the deplorable crimes committed by al-Salman against defenseless Yemeni women and children is in fact participation in genocide and destruction of resources and infrastructures of this poverty-stricken country.”

Shamkhani stressed that in order to stop the spread of terrorism to the West, it is necessary for European countries to play a constructive and non-discriminatory role in confronting the main branches of the crisis in Iraq, Syria and other terror-infected areas.

The Iranian senior official then voiced keen interest in expanding long-term cooperation in the fields of economic transactions, banking relations and insurance, calling for specific mechanisms to be installed for implementing the agreements between Iran and Luxembourg.

“In the post-JCPOA era and following the lift of sanctions, Luxembourg has now ample opportunity to make use of Iran’s extensive capacities for investment,” he said.

Jean Asselborn, for his part, noted Iran’s positive role in fighting terrorism, and called for further talks and cooperation on various fields between the two countries.

“The agenda of European countries, especially after the Iran’s nuclear deal, is to expand all-out cooperation and investment in various sectors of infrastructure aimed at reaching long-termed and strong economic relations with Iran,” he said.
