Iranian basketball club, Petrochimi Bandar Imam, defeated Iraqi club of Al-Shorta, 88-67, at the quarter final of the 25th edition of Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup.
At the event held at the Chenzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the Chinese city of Chenzhou early on Friday the Iranian club lost the first half 40-37 but recovered in the remaining quarters
The three-point shots of Mehrdad Atashi at the last quarter of the encounter kept Petrochimi’s supremacy till the end as they got their spot among the last four to play, on Saturday at 03:30 pm local time, with the winner of the Friday encounter between Al Rayyan of Qatar and China Kashgar.
The 25th edition of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup kicked off in Chenzhou, China, on October 8 and will wrap up on October 16.
Petrochimi was drawn in Group A along with Lebanon’s Al Riyadi, Indian ONGC, Qatar’s Al Rayyan and Pauian Archiland of Chinese Taipei.
Al Shorta of Iraq, Kazakhstan’s Barsy Atyrau, Malaysian Westports Malaysia Dragons, Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates and China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers formed the Group B of the tournament.
The preliminary round of the tournament was played in a round robin format, with every team taking on four opponents in its respective group.
The top four teams from each group advanced to the quarter-finals. The Iranian team earned a quarter-final spot as the runner-up of Group A.
