Ali Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with Faleh al-Fayyad, the National Security Advisor and Envoy of Iraqi Prime Minister, on Tuesday in Tehran.
Highlighting the wide opportunities for cooperation as well as historical commonalities between Iran and Iraq, Shamkhani underlined the achievements of Iraqi Army and public forces in fighting terrorism and improvement of security condition in the country which "has set the ground for expansion of economic and trade ties between Tehran and Baghdad as strategic partners.”
He also called for acceleration in formation of the joint commission for border issues; “the commission could play a vital role in solving existing differences and help the economic growth of border areas of both countries as well as expansion of border trade.”
“Iran would continue its support for Iraqi and Syrian governments until the entire elimination of terrorism in the region,” Shamkhani emphasized and asserted that the constant achievements of Iraqi Army and public forces in countering terrorists and Takfiris were result of paying attention to domestic capacities for establishing peace and security in Iraq and reaffirmed that “united and integrated Iraq would soon reach its true position in political, economic and security fields both in regional and international scenes.”
“Supporting extremist and Takfiri ideology, planning coups and trying to inflame the fire of tensions in Islamic countries are the main plots of enemies to weaken the sovereignty of Islamic world,” underlined the member of Iran’s Expediency Council, adding that unfortunately some states in the region are also following the same policies aggravating the sectarian and religious conflicts.
Faleh al-Fayyad, for his part, extended his gratitude to Islamic Republic’s stances and efforts in supporting the Iraq while briefing Shamkhani on the latest developments of Arab country.
“Iraq is concerned by interventionist policies of some countries and their respected embassies and would confront strongly any destabilizing and disintegrating attempt,” Fayyad affirmed.
