TEHRAN, Jul. 19 (MNA) – A letter by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has communicated winning by an Iranian of a global geo-parks council seat.

Ms. Bokova's letter, dated Monday July 18, presented Mr. Alireza Amri Kazemi, an expert of geotourism and geopark, with the seat. Mr. Kazemi's incumbency in the seat will be for two years (2016-18). He has been an active member of environmental causes, researched extensively in geotourism and geoparks and published papers and other written material; he was responsible for listing Qeshm as a Geopark.

Iran is the sole representative of the Middle East, Western Asia, and North Africa in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, and Mr. Kazemi's mission will also be to cover geoparks in those regions as well.

UNESCO Global Geoparks Council is a 12-member international body which supervises over accurate implementation of international plans of geoscience (on geoparks section) and is responsible for approval and passing received proposals made with regions for a geopark title. The selection would greatly advance Qeshm Geopark application for registration in world geopark list, with Aras and Lorestan geoparks in line for the registration as well.
