Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who arrived in Riga on Thursday morning, held talks with Latvian parliamentary senior official after meeting with President Raimonds Vējonis and addressing Iran-Latvia trade meeting in Latvian capital.
Zarif and Mūrniece both stressed the need to further Tehran-Riga ties in all possible fields particularly parliamentary relations.
Noting the start of Iran’s 10th Parliament on May 29, Zarif expressed hope for expansion of parliamentary ties between Iran and Latvia through exchange of high-ranking delegations.
“The business delegation accompanying me in my visit indicates Iran’s will to strengthen economic ties with Latvia,” said Iranian foreign minister.
Latvian official, for her part, underlined that Latvia would never forget the time Iran didn’t recognize Latvia’s occupation in 1940, adding, “your visit is a turning point in history of Tehran-Riga ties.”
She also announced the full support of Latvian Parliament of bolstering bilateral ties in all fields of interest.
Zarif also paid homage to Freedom Monument of Riga, which is a memorial to honor soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence.
