SEOUL, Mar. 26 (MNA) – Iranian fencer Mojtaba Abedini advanced to the semifinals in 2016 SK Telecom Seoul Grand Prix and secured a bronze medal and two Olympic berths for Iran in sabra fencing.

On the second day of the 2016 SK Telecom Seoul Grand Prix currently underway in Seoul, South Korea, Mojtaba Abedini defeated his French opponent 17-15 in the 64-competitors table. In the 32-competitors table, Abedini fought against world champion South Korea’s athlete and won the competition 15-13. In the next game, he won against his Hungarian opponent 15-12 and advanced to the group of top eight fencers of Seoul Grand Prix with 21 Olympic points.

Abedni, who held the world’s 14th ranking and had 13 Olympic points, managed to secure his place among the world’s top 14 fencers and grab 2 olympic berths for Iran in sabra fencing.

Following his 15-14 win against a Korean fencer, Abedni advanced to the semifinals and grabbed a bronze medal. Abedini’s medal is the first fencing medal for Iran at such level of competitions.

Abedini also set the ground for Ali Pakdaman, another fencer on the roster of Iran's national fencing team, to secure a place at Olympics as the best Asian fencer in the world ranking.

The 2016 SK Telecom Seoul Grand Prix is being held at Seoul, South Korea, on 25-26th March as the last qualifying phase for sabra fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
