ROME, Jan. 31 (MNA) – The authorities of Italy rescued Saturday a group of 400 migrants at the Mediterranean Sea in the last few days, reported the Italian Navy.

The undocumented reached the port of Taranto in the south of the country and, according to the disclosed information, they mostly come from sub-Saharan Africa.

There were also transferred the bodies of six foreigners who died two days ago, shortly before rescuers arrived to assist the boat in which they were traveling.

The International Organization for Migration reported Friday that about 55, 500 undocumented arrived in Europe in the first four weeks of 2016, which figure is several times higher than the 5, 550 registered in January last year.

On the other hand, he added, until Friday (29 Jan.) was reported 244 deaths in shipwrecks, a number that far surpasses the 82 of 2015 and 12 in 2014.

The statistics released confirm the continuity and deepening of the immigration crisis that began last year with the arrival of more than one million foreigners, while the European Union (EU) is still unable to coordinate a joint and effective response to the phenomenon.

From Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that only with joint efforts of the whole region will be possible to face the unstoppable migratory flow.
