According to Behrouz Kamalvandi, Deputy Head and Spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Amano’s visit will be only a formality and he is not scheduled to visit any facilities while on his one-day visit to Tehran.
Kamalvandi added that the IAEA head would instead hold a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to discuss ways for further cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.
“The JCPOA has predicted an eight-year term of implementation, but we wish to arrive at that point as soon as possible and this can only be possible with closer cooperation between Iran and the Agency,” Kamalvandi said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the AEOI head Ali Akbar Salehi said the IAEA is also active in providing services to its members and “therefore, our cooperation following the implementation of the JCPOA will continue and develop.”
During a joint press conference held in Vienna on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini announced that Iran nuclear deal had reached the implementation stage and sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear program have been lifted. The announcement was made after the IAEA confirmed Iran’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
