Iran to import 1,000 BMWs before year-end

TEHRAN, Dec. 15 (MNA) — The first parcel of 117 BMW cars has been imported to country but the figure is expected to reach 1,000 before year-end (closing March 20, 2005), ISNA quoted Nouriani Company’s manager as saying.

Nouriani Company represents German BMW manufacturing factory in Iran.

The rest of cars are to be imported in two parcels, one consists of 162 cars and the other comprises of 720 cars.

The order registrations have been already carried out and the required credit has been opened up to import some 1,000 BMW passenger cars, he added.

However, there are some restrictions for numbering the cars since Iranian police has been waiting to receive the permit required for the job from the Ministry of Commerce.

Nouriani said that formalities have been done and his company will soon obtain and pass the permit to the police to start numbering procedure.

The importing cars would be of different models such as 318, 325, 330, 530 in two types of 630, and X3-730.

Government had banned car imports since 1979 in an attempt to make a large room for locally manufactured vehicles.

However, it has recently ratified a law that allows individuals to import new cars but it levies heavy tariff – 170 percent – to the imports too. As a result, the people have been forced so far to drive low-quality passenger cars at unreasonable prices.
