Abbasabad to become Iran’s most beautiful garden again

TEHRAN, Nov. 28 (MNA) -- The manager of the Research Center for the Behshahr Historical Gardens announced on Sunday that its experts plan to restore the Abbasabad Garden in order to make it the most perfect garden of Iran again.

“The Abbasabad Garden is the most wonderful and perfect of all Iranian gardens. The wide area of the garden is one of its specific characteristics which is not seen in other Iranian gardens,” said Abdolvahhab Musavinasab.

The Abbasabad Garden is located nine kilometers southeast of Behshahr in Mazandaran Province. The garden was constructed in an area of 500 acres during the reign of Shah Abbas (1571-1629) of the Safavid dynasty.

“The garden has unique architectural aspects, one of which being its symmetrical terraced shape. The main axis of the garden points toward the qibla and sunrise and sunset are easily visible from every corner of the garden,” Musavinasab said.

The garden has a lake with a brick and stone tower in its center. The 18-meter tower is almost entirely submerged in some seasons of year.

The garden also has two other watchtowers and a number of other monuments.

A private sector company has been commissioned to carry out topographical mapping of the garden and the details of the garden will soon be determined, Musavinasab stated.

Several years ago, archaeologists discovered the wonderful waterworks of the park which had been connected to the water supply system of the city as well as bathhouses, and recreational centers. Built on the top of a slope beside the Abbasabad Dam, the excellent water system had three terraced floors, each used by a specific social class.

Iran’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization has established tourism facilities in the garden, including a modern restaurant serving unique Iranian and foreign cuisine in a pleasant atmosphere.

The garden has a number of spectacular waterfalls and a stream flowing into the western side of the lake, which gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy walking and even swimming.

The art of garden design in Iran dates back to at least 500 B.C. and was developed in the Safavid era (1501-1722). Iranian gardens were built in desert regions before the Safavid era, but the Abbasabad Garden is one of the rare examples of a garden constructed in a forested region.
