Mahmoud Alavi elected to Assembly of Experts

TEHRAN, June 16 (MNA) -- Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi has been elected as one of Tehran’s representatives to the Assembly of Experts, winning 2,063,632 votes out of a total 5,846,107 ballots cast in Tehran.

The Assembly of Experts by-election was held simultaneously with the presidential election on June 12.

 

Abdolhadi Mortazavi was also elected as a representative of Golestan Province, winning 374,251 of the 870,703 votes cast in the province’s Assembly of Experts by-election.

 

Elections for the 86-member Assembly of Experts are held every eight years. Only clerics can be elected and candidates for elections are vetted by the Guardian Council.

 

The responsibilities of the Assembly of Experts are appointing the Supreme Leader, monitoring his performance, and electing five people to the Constitution Review Commission.
