Araghchi calls on UNSC to act responsibly, extend Res. 2231

TEHRAN, Sep. 26 (MNA) – The Iranian foreign minister has said that the UN Securiity Council in its meeting later on Friday needs to live up to its responsibity and extend the sanctions relief on Iran.

"This afternoon, the UN Security Council will be voting on a draft resolution to extend resolution 2231. It is a fleeting opportunity for the Council to say 'No' to confrontation and 'Yes' to cooperation, providing time and space for diplomacy," wrote Abbas Araghchi in a post on his X account on Friday.

The UN Security Council is slated to hold a meeting to disuss a draft resoluton submitted by Russia and China to extend sanctions relief on Iran.

Over the past weeks, Iran has made several proposals to keep the door of diplomacy open, but the three European countries known as E3 did not respond and the United States continued its hostile policy with increased pressure.

In the face of this clear policy of escalating tensions by the three European countries and the United States, Iran calls on the members of the Council to act responsibly and vote for diplomacy, justice and international law.

The E3 have activated the snapback mechanism against Tehran, an action Iran, Russia, and China consider illegal.
