Cultural heritage main victim of Borujerd quake

TEHRAN, Apr. 3 (MNA) -- The Borujerd quake has caused serious damage to the cultural heritage of the city, the director of the Borujerd Cultural Heritage and Tourism Office said on Friday.

“The monuments, most of them registered on the National Heritage List, have been 80 percent damaged. We are carefully studying the extent of the damage, but the condition of the monuments is very sad,” Hojjatollah Yarmohammadi added.

An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale struck Borujerd and a number of villages in the western Iranian province of Lorestan on March 31 and left about 100 dead.

“Some historical houses built of mud-bricks have been totally destroyed, and three major monuments of Borujerd, i.e. the Jame (Congregational) Mosque, the Imam Mosque, and the shrine of Imamzadeh Jafar (AS) have been nearly 50 percent damaged,” he explained.

The main iwan, the rotunda, rooms on the western side and on the upper story, and the adornments of the gates of the Borujerd Jame Mosque have been entirely destroyed, Yarmohammadi said, adding that the foundations of the monuments have also been damaged, but experts have still not completely assessed the damage.

Cultural heritage agents have been ordered to guard the monuments, and visitors will not be permitted to approach these places until the rescue operation is completed.
