Iraq's territorial integrity, national unity vital for regional security

TEHRAN, Sep. 25 (MNA) – Iranian and Turkish presidents discussed the most important bilateral and regional issues, including the referendum in Kurdistan Region of Iraq during a phone conversation on Sunday.

Hassan Rouhani and Recep Teyyip Erdogan had a phone conversation on the stances of the two countries and emphasized that the integrity and national unity of Iraq should by no means be undermined.

Expressing happiness over the good interaction between Iran and Turkey in this regard, President Rouhani said, “preserving territorial integrity and national unity of Iraq and security of the region are vital for the Islamic Republic of Iran and it is imperative to give a clear message to the disruptors of stability and security in the region."

He also stressed, “coordination and cooperation between the countries of the region will be very important in this regard and undoubtedly, the countries of the region will not allow the formation of new instability in the region."

The Turkish president while stressing Turkey's readiness to develop relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all fields of mutual interest, referred to his country's vast efforts to cope with the instability in Iraq following the formation of the Turkish National Security Council and the extraordinary meeting of his country's parliament to make the necessary decisions in connection with the referendum.

The two sides also exchanged views on the political, economic, and military measures and any move necessary, while the parliament also authorized the government to carry out operations in the border in connection with the developments in Iraq and Syria.
