In his congratulatory message, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif deemed Germany’s former Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier a prominent politician and supporter of peace and global dialogue.
“I hope that in this new, great responsibility as President you will be a source of constructive service to the country and the people of Germany, just as you had been in the position of foreign minister during which I have had many close cooperation and consultation with you,” Zarif said.
Zarif further called for advancement and expansion of the already firm and friendly ties between the two great nations of Iran and Germany during the presidency of Steinmeier.
The former foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, 61, was voted in on Sunday by a parliamentary assembly made up of 1,260 MPs and representatives of Germany’s 16 states. A member of the Social Democratic party, Steinmeier succeeds Joachim Gauck. The German politician has made a number of visits to Iran after the implementation of the nuclear deal and has extended an invitation to President Rouhani for a visit to Germany.
