Parl. speaker grieves Ayat. Rafsanjani’s death

TEHRAN, Jan. 08 (MNA) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has extended his condolences over the demise of Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani who passed away at 83 on Sunday.

“A great man has passed away whose visage reflected his 60 years of fight against tyranny and colonialism, his relentless efforts for establishing the Islamic Republic, his unparalleled endeavors to defend the independence and territorial integrity of Iran, and constant effort for the development and prosperity of the country,” Ali Larijani described him in a statement Sunday night.

Larijani noted the many years of Rafsanjani’s imprisonment accompanied by torture and mistreatment during the 1960s and 70s for his political activities, and commended him for shouldering the great responsibility of managing the country during the years of war and chaos in the wake of Iraq’s imposed war on Iran (1980-88).

“As president, he was most coordinated with Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the Leader always gave support to his government,” he added.

Larijani went on to express his deepest regret and condolences over the tragedy, and wished for the late Iranian official the highest place in Heaven and prayed God for bestowing patience upon his family and friends.
