Araghchi calls for exploiting D-8’s enormous potentials

TEHRAN, Sep. 24 (MNA) – Iran’s Deputy FM has emphasized that capacities of the Developing-8 organization need to be used to boost trade and economic cooperation.

Chaired by the Pakistani foreign minister, Meeting of the D-8 Council of Foreign Ministers was held on September 23 on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Iranian delegation at the session was led by Iran’s deputy FM for legal and international Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araghchi.

In his speech, the Iranian diplomat emphasized on seizing the opportunities offered by the Group of Eight (D-8) for economic and trade collaborations through strengthening the private sector and exchange of experiences.

Araghchi also deemed the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals as a proper international framework with which D-8 nations can delineate their priorities in line with expansion of multilateral ties.

The official welcomed Turkey’s initiative to host the 2017 Summit of D-8 in Ankara and underscored the significance of the forthcoming occasion.

Also during the New York session, Seyyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi of Iran retained his position as the Secretary General of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation until the 2017 summit.

D-8, also known as Developing-8, is an organization for development cooperation among Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

The establishment of D-8 was announced officially through the Istanbul Declaration of Summit of Heads of State/Government on June 15, 1997.
