UN calls for addressing root causes of extremism

GENEVA, Apr. 09 (MNA) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Friday to address the root causes of violent extremism to prevent its rapid spread.

The lack of governance and the existence of people who feel marginalized, eliminated or isolated from society help to understand the proliferation, stated the official at a joint press conference with Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter, during the final day of a conference on the prevention of violent extremism in the UN headquarters in Geneva.

Ban stated that young people without jobs or economic and social opportunities are particularly vulnerable.

"The international community has not been able to effectively treat the root causes of this", he said.

According to the UN Secretary-General, this complex scenario explained the efforts of the United Nations to prevent extremism and one of its most dangerous consequences; terrorism.
