Official results confirm Syriza’s victory in Greece

ATHENS, Sep. 21 (MNA) – With 43 percent of the ballots counted in the legislative elections in Greece yesterday, official results showed a clear victory for Syriza party, which represents a significant popular support and validates its leader Alexis Tsipras.

Although the percentages and distribution of seats may vary slightly at the end of the counting, with 35 percent of the votes the leftist formation would have 145 deputies, which means it only needs six more to get an absolute majority.

The first comment of Tsipras to celebrate this victory came from his Twitter account where he wrote: with hard work and perseverance, we’ll move forward.

His main rival, the conservative party New Democracy (ND), was unexpectedly defeated and ended with 28 percent of the vote and 75 seats, although many polls during the campaign had shown the possibility of a victory.

Their leader, Evangelos Meimarakis, soon congratulated Syriza on its victory, while other conservative leaders did not hesitate to speak of a relay in the leadership of the formation and a call to an extraordinary congress.

The third party with parliamentary representation is the neo-fascist Golden Dawn that despite having all its leaders in jail, awaiting trial, managed to improve by about one point its previous result in January resulting in 19 percent and two more seats.

Five other formations also surpassed the legal minimum of three percent to enter parliament, including the Communist Party, which repeated the percentage of votes and deputies, and the nationalist Independent Greeks, former partner in coalition with Syriza.

Regarding a possible pact of government for the legislature that start today, the former Interior Minister, Nikos Vutsis stressed that if the results are confirmed, Syriza and Anel account for 155 deputies, so the previous pact, which was very efficient, could repeated quickly.
