Iran wins World Taekwondo Championships

TEHRAN, May 18 (MNA) – Iran’s taekwondo national squad has pushed Russia and South Korea down in the roost to embrace the championship.

The championship welcomed Iran rather early in the course of the battle in the sixth day of the Russia 2015 championship, with major threats of Russia and South Korea seeing their representatives out of the competitions in the 8th weight category. This strengthened Iran’s already first place in the top of the classification table.

Mehdi Khodabakhshi, Iran’s man in 6th weight category (-80kg), had a relax draw in the first round; in the second round, he won Greek Nikolas Touzeles 5-2 to qualify for the third round. Russian Shakhbanov lost to Taiwan’s representative in the second round after a relax draw in the first; the same was the fate of South Korean Kim Yong who was defeated in the hands of Serbian representative in the category. With Iran’s representative still on the race for the first place, Iran enjoys its second trophy after the first in 2011.

Iran’s Shokraneh Izadi in women’s section in -62kg category defeated Tima Braun from Hungary 14-0, but lost to Irem Yaman, Turkish gold medalist in European championship by golden point in 4th round to farewell adieu to the competitions.

On Monday evening, Abolfazl Yaqoubi and Kimia Alizadeh will fight in semifinals against Belgian and Japanese rivals. Iran won gold medals by Farzan Ashourzadeh and Masoud Hajizavareh; others were left out of the matches without winning a medal.
