OANA Technical Cmte. discusses social media in news

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 15 (MNA) – The meeting of Technical Committee of OANA reviewed country reports in regard to role of social media in news.

The 38th meeting of Executive Board and Technical Committee of Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies kicked off on February 13 to run for three days.

With the special theme of the meeting being designated to focus on challenges of using social media in news broadcasting, the meeting headed by First Deputy Director of Russia’s Tass Mikhail Gusman reviewed country reports of member agencies.

A member of the Committee, Mehr News also provided its social media policy and a review of several social media profiles responsible for reaching out to the audience. Quick broadcasting possibilities serving timeliness of news, interactive connection to the end-users, and ease of access were among strengths of social media according to Mehr News policy.

Part of the report by Mehr News also highlighted the possibility of raising awareness among the public by promoting citizen journalism through social media and networks and by launching campaigns, contests, etc. on issues of concern; particularly social and global concerns such as climate change and warming, tangible and intangible heritage as well as protecting biodiversity in Iran and the world.

The summit wrapped on February 15 and the next meeting was set to be held in Seoul, South Korea in November.
