The resolution against Iran was passed, even though over 110 countries refrained to vote in favor of it. Eighty countries voted for the resolution and there were 44 nays and 57 abstentions.
The draft resolution was sponsored by the United States, the European Union, Canada, and other Western countries.
“Basically the venue to review human rights situation in countries is the UN Human Rights Council which is located in Geneva, and not the UN General Assembly,” the female lawmaker told reporters on Saturday.
She added that the world’s public opinion must ask whether the U.S., which has a long and “black” record in violating human rights laws, has the authority to sponsor such a resolution against another country.
“We assume that approving the human rights resolution against Iran in the UN General Assembly is in fact circumventing the UN Human Rights Council,” explained Elahian, head of the Majlis Human Rights Committee.
She also announced that the issue would be studied at the committee’s meeting on Tuesday.
The 118-member Non-Aligned Movement and the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference condemned the resolution against Iran.
Many countries and international organizations have criticized Western countries for their double standards on human rights and their politicization of rights issues at the United Nations.
