TEHRAN, May 20 (MNA) – "President Raeisi was a true patriot who loved his country very much, and we also lost a reliable friend and ally," Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber who will be in charge of the cabinet of ministers following the tragic martyrdom of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi.

Putin emphasized the continuation of the path of President Raeisi in the development of cordial relations between Iran and Russia.

In this phone call, Putin expressed his deepest condolences to the Leader of the Revolution and all the people of Iran and said that since yesterday, Russia has made every effort to help save his life, but unfortunately, the disaster happened earlier.

"I personally and closely knew Mr. Raeisi and now I have lost him. undoubtedly, Raeisi was a true patriot who loved his country very much, and we also lost a reliable friend and ally,"

"Ayatollah Raeisi was not an ordinary president for us, but he was a hard-working person who loved the people," Mokhber said, adding that the Islamic system is so strong that it will survive these difficult times.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian have martyred in a helicopter crash in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.

The helicopter carrying President Raeisi and his accompanying delegation crashed on Sunday in the Dizmar forest, nestled between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa in East Azarbaijan Province.

It was transporting Raeisi, Amir-Abdollahian, East Azarbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, Friday Prayers leader of the city of Tabriz Seyyed Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem , and a member of the president’s bodyguard team Mahdi Mousavi. The helicopter’s pilot, co-pilot and crew were also among others on board the chopper.

President Raeisi and his accompanying delegation were returning from a ceremony to inaugurate a dam on the Aras River with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.
