Senior Iranian diplomat Nasser Kan'ani made the remarks while speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday morning.
Regarding Iran's recent operations against the Zionist regime, Nasser Kan'ani stated that we can not still estimate the diplomatic positions of the US.
Saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a security-generating power, Kan'ani stressed that the country's action in attacking the military headquarters of the Zionist regime was carried out in line with the exercise of the substantive right of legitimate defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, considering the Israeli regime's recent aggression against Iran's diplomatic building in Damascus.
He noted that the Iranian diplomatic apparatus and the country's armed forces acted completely professionally in the recent event and gave a legitimate response to the aggressive act of the Zionist regime.
Iran had issued the necessary warnings before the military action, he added.
Iran does not seek to develop tension in the region, Kan’ani said, noting that Iran adheres to international standards and laws and will always act to deter and punish any aggressor.
He stressed that Iran's action was necessary, proportionate, and aimed at military targets.
He further pointed out that considering the lack of action by the United Nations and the UN Security Council and the irresponsible behavior of the United States and several European countries in deterring the Zionist regime's crimes, Iran took action in the form of legitimate defense.
He continued that it is expected that other countries including the United States pay attention to Iran's logical and responsible response and appreciate Iran's actions which are to protect regional stability and security instead of taking irrational positions.
On Tehran-Baku ties
Elsewhere in his remarks, Kan'ani stated that preparations for the resumption of diplomatic activities of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Iran have been made and the presidents of the two countries have discussed this issue.
There is a consensus that along with the growth of other fields of cooperation, political and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries also grows, and the activity of the diplomacy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Iran renews, Kan’ani said.
Iran committed to freedom of navigation in Strait of Hormuz based on international laws
He further stressed that Iran has always been committed to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz based on international laws and regulations and has acted within this framework.
He added that Iran seized the Israeli-linked ship due to the violation of international shipping regulations committed by the ship, as well as the lack of a proper response to the Iranian authorities.
Iran calls on US to logically, responsibly
Kan'ani said that other parties such as the United States and some European countries are expected to respond to Iran’s measures logically and responsibly and that they should appreciate Iran’s efforts to preserve regional stability and security instead of using illogical words and positions.
The most rational job that those governments can do is to stand alongside states that play a constructive role in creating peace and security in the region, he said.
The spokesman also urged European countries to appreciate Iran’s patience and self-restraint over the past months and stop standing alongside the aggressive Zionist regime.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Kan'ani said that the UN Human Rights Council approved two resolutions concerning the Zionist regime, with one prohibiting arms exports to the regime and the other calling for a ceasefire, adding that Iran supports both resolutions.
On the prohibition of arms exports to the Zionist regime, Iran sees the UN Human Rights Council’s act as a positive step and yet another international recognition of the terrorist nature of the regime, he added.
Imposing any new sanctions not to be constructive
Referring to the actions of some Western governments regarding the nuclear agreement with Iran and the intention to sanction Iran, Kan'ani emphasized that their approach is not responsible and they owe Iran.
Any new sanctions will not be constructive and will not contribute to bilateral relations, he added.
Iran has acted responsibly on the nuclear issue and will continue its commitments based on the nuclear agreement and safeguards, he added.
He further continued that regarding European economic policies, Iran is willing to promote relations based on mutual respect and common interests.
